10 Steps To Success With Your ADHD/Anxious Child - FREE Ebook
Wow, it’s been a while since I sent out a blog, times flies when you're having fun, and being a mum to an ADHD child is never dull that's for sure! If you follow me on social media, you'll have seen that things are getting very exciting at the Susy Parker camp! If you’ve missed any of that, I thought I would send you an update to let you know that I'm working on a FREE Ebook for parents.
It was an interesting May for us, as we started to notice behaviours in Sarah that we hadn’t seen for about 18 months. She was very hyperactive and forgetful, and her mood was different. She became difficult to manage, and we found ourselves once again shouting at her (a lot). She wasn’t getting along with her brother and sister; the defiance was back with a vengeance and life was starting to get challenging!
We’d recently moved, and Sarah isn’t great with change (most ADHD kids struggle with this), but she seemed so happy with the move, so we felt confused by this? I was wondering what on earth had happened? My mind wondered, and I found myself going back to my book and re-reading it. I wanted to see if I was missing something?
Then out of the blue, Sarah broke down and told me that she was having a hard time at school. She was getting told off a lot and being sent out of her class amongst other things. She'd also fallen out with a friend and was struggling with her schoolwork.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve learned that while ADHD kids need boundaries, one thing that doesn't work for them is negative behaviour management. ADHD children are often very bright, but their brains work differently, and when we berate them for this, put them on time out, shout or send them out, etc. they are unable to process it in the same way as other children.
I talk about this at length in 'Saving Sarah', but all this does is create a defiant, non-compliant child and then you have ADHD and ODD (oppositional defiance disorder), and no-one wants that!
Immediately I had meetings with the school and advised them exactly what Sarah needed to help her thrive. I asked for an IEP (individual education plan) and explained all about her ADHD. I told them about the lack of dopamine and how it affects executive functioning (making decisions), and how her body moves as it's trying to produce more dopamine (which will help with executive functioning). I explained that telling her off in front of the class, sending her out, etc. wouldn’t help Sarah, it would hinder her behaviour and success in school.
I have to say the school were amazing! They put in place a positive behaviour method, agreed to give Sarah more breaks to run outside (if she was struggling to concentrate), and agreed to let her sit on her own table close to the teacher (to help her focus). They would also support her need to move.
At home, we went back to the ‘pasta in the jar’ method which I've recently shared on my social media and youtube account. We started ‘lovebombing’ and spent more one-on-one time with her. We increased her exercise, kept a closer eye on her diet, and I made sure that she used her essential oils and supplements every day.
Sarah’s teacher called me five days later and told me that the difference was unbelievable. She wanted to understand it as the turnaround was hard to comprehend. That night my husband took Sarah out for pizza and a movie to congratulate her on such a tremendous effort! I knew then that my method for helping Sarah thrive with ADHD was so valuable, that I wanted to share it with as many parents as possible.
I've said many times that we don’t use medication for Sarah. We tried various types of medication, but for us, they only made her behaviour worse. I’m not against medication, but I believe that medication is only part of the jigsaw puzzle and often parents and teachers aren’t given any extra support other than that. There are so many other pieces of the puzzle needed to make up the whole picture.
My intention is to help parents achieve a better relationship with their ADHD child and to empower them with the knowledge to support their teachers. I want parents to have a calmer, happier life and to see that if their child’s ADHD is nurtured in the right way, they can be the most awesome human beings!
